CLIMATE EVENTS IN ROCHESTER, NY:
Monday, November 30 – Friday, December 11, 2015
TWELVE DAYS OF CLIMATE: Paris Talks, We Act
A 12-day series of events and initiatives that provide a wide range of opportunities for Rochesterians to take part in the fight against climate change. Each day highlights a distinct approach to solving the climate crisis, with suggestions for related actions.
See calendar and list of themes below or click HERE .
COMMUNITY – Wednesday, 12/9
No one can solve the problem of climate change alone. We need to work together, and we need to act in cooperation with others around the world. Our success or failure will depend on how well we can find common ground and coordinate our efforts as communities both large and small. On this Tenth Day of Climate, we find out how things are going at the COP 21 Climate Talks in Paris to connect with the global community.
What you can do:
Environmental leader Belén Páez of Pachamama Alliance will host a conference call live from Paris, to share news and stories from the Conference of the Parties, COP21. Join this call (either from home or with a local group of concerned citizens) to be inspired by and learn about the international community efforts to bring about real change in protecting our planet. The call begins at 1 p.m.
1. Listen from home. Click here to register for the call online. (Note: you do not need to be a Pachamama Facilitator to join the call)
Listen with a community of like-minded locals:
Where: 506 Panorama Trail, Rochester 14625, home of Sue S.
When: Arrive between 12:30-12:45. Optional discussion will follow the call.
RSVP appreciated, but not required. To RSVP or get more information,
contact Sue at suestar1@rochester.rr.com or 585-734-2816.
(Sponsored by the Pachamama Alliance)
SAFETY – Tuesday, 12/8
Explosive oil trains travel through Rochester and surrounding suburbs every day – past schools, homes, and through town centers. They are carrying an extremely combustible type of crude oil that is obtained by fracking the Bakken Shale in North Dakota. This process and the resulting oil are more toxic and harmful to health, safety, the ecosystem, and the climate than regular crude. A train derailed and exploded in Quebec in 2013 resulting in 47 deaths and the near-total destruction of the town. There have been six derailments so far in 2015. This level of risk is simply unacceptable. On this Ninth Day of Climate, we demand that our leaders keep us safe!
What you can do:
1. Find out if you live, work, or attend school in or near the blast zone: http://explosive-crude-by-rail.org/.
2. Sign Mothers Out Front’s Bakken petition.
(Sponsored by Mothers Out Front)
FOOD – Monday, 12/7
Did you know that over 50% percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture (Worldwatch Institute)? On this Eighth Day of Climate, we reduce our consumption of meat and other animal products to significantly lower our personal carbon footprints.
What you can do:
1. It’s Meatless Monday, so skip the meat today! Shake up your diet with a recipe from the Rochester Area Vegan Society
2. Want to go all in? Make an early New Year’s Resolution to start the 21 Day Vegan Kickstart.
(Sponsored by the Rochester Area Vegan Society)
FAITH – Sunday, 12/6
Faith leaders here in Rochester and around the world are calling for action on climate. Pope Francis is perhaps the most prominent example of this, but did you know that 11 of RPCC’s 56 members are religious organizations? That’s impressive, but let’s not stop there. Climate change is a moral issue, so we need every religious and spiritual group to get on board! On this Seventh Day of Climate, we ask our faith leaders to truly take the lead on fighting climate change.
What you can do:
1. Contact the leaders of your faith community (priest, rabbi, imam, board members, etc.) and ask them to take Interfaith Power & Light’s Paris Pledge on behalf of your congregation. By doing so, they commit to significantly reducing your congregation’s carbon pollution. (And while you’re at it, please ask them to join RPCC as well!)
2. You can also take the Paris Pledge as an individual.
HOPE – Saturday, 12/5
Today’s children are tomorrow’s stewards of the Earth. Children are our future and they deserve to inherit a livable planet. Because young people have the most at stake in this climate crisis, their voices should be heard and they should have the opportunity to engage in meaningful climate action. On this sixth day of climate, we support youth who are working to protect their inheritance.
What you can do:
1. Learn about and pledge to support Our Children’s Trust
2. Attend (or encourage your students/children/young friends to attend) our
Youth Climate Leaders Summit.
What: The purpose of this summit is to bring student leaders from area schools together to make connections and discuss ways to take action and collaborate in the face of climate change. The summit will be led primarily by students, who will present information on the basic science of climate change, impacts of climate change, approaches to climate activism, and examples of youth leadership on climate. The event is open to all, but 7-12 grade students (and teachers) who are interested in environmental issues and climate activism are especially encouraged to attend.
When: Saturday, December 5, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Where: The Harley School, 1981 Clover Street
For more information, contact Terry Smith (tsmith@harleyschool.org) or Abigail McHugh-Grifa (abigailmchugh@hotmail.com)
(Sponsored by Rochester Climate Action, Mothers Out Front, and The Harley School)
EDUCATION – Friday, 12/4
Knowledge is power! To effectively advocate for the planet and its inhabitants, we first need to understand what’s going on. On this Fifth Day of Climate, we educate ourselves about climate science and solutions.
What you can do:
1. Learn about the inner workings of the Paris Talks. Watch this video and share! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slGDJNW-nMo&feature=youtu.be
2. Attend “Right Here Right Now: What Should we be Doing About Climate Change?”
What: Modeled on the the Paris Climate Talks, Grassroots wil be holding a panel discussion to address what our generation should be doing about climate change right now. Panelists will include John Kessler, David Hursh and others to be announced. Talks will conclude with a catered reception.
When: Friday, December 4, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Where: University of Rochester, The May Room of Wilson Commons. Stop by the information booth as you enter campus for a parking pass and directions.
For more information, email grassrootsur@gmail.com or visit the Facebook event page
(Sponsored by Grassroots)
STATE – Thursday, 12/3
New York State can and should lead our county toward a sustainable future! Fortunately activists and elected leaders throughout our state are working to achieve this, but they need your help. On this Fourth Day of Climate, we support the efforts of activists and elected leaders from around the state who are working to enact legislation to swiftly transition NYS to clean sources of energy.
What you can do:
1. Call your representatives in the NYS Assembly and Senate to ask that they support the 100% Renewable Now legislation:Assembly: Bill number A7497 / Click here to look up your rep
Senate: Bill number S5527/ Click here to look up your rep
2. Attend RPCC’s NY Statewide Strategy Summit with Mark Dunlea of GELF
What: Mark Dunlea, co-leader of NYS’s 100% Renewable Now Campaign, will present a vision for building a statewide strategy and solicit feedback on how to coordinate and develop this movement. Breakout sessions will be focused on generating concrete next steps. Community members and organization representatives interested in creating a renewable energy infrastructure by 2030 are strongly encouraged to attend! Let’s be sure Rochester has a voice!
When: Thursday, December 3, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Where: St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2000 Highland Ave
For more information contact suehughessmith@gmail.com
(Sponsored by RPCC)
MONEY – Wednesday, 12/2
Divestment is the opposite of investment. It means getting rid of stocks, bonds, or investment funds that are unethical or morally ambiguous. The purpose of divestment is to stigmatize the fossil fuel industry and free up money for reinvestment in “green” businesses. Examples of past divestment campaigns that succeeded in prompting social change include those waged against the tobacco industry and companies doing business in Darfur and apartheid-era South Africa. On this Third Day of Climate, we put our money where our mouth is, and ask others to do the same.
What you can do:
Sign petitions for these state & local divestment campaigns:
NYS Retirement Funds, RIT, U of R
Learn about how divestment can benefit you and the planet!
What: At this divestment seminar, Bob Bechtold (President of HARBEC) and Joseph A Cappello (CMFC, CTFA Wealth Manager, LPL registered Representative ESL Investment Services) will share their experience with divestment to help you divest your assets quickly, easily, and effectively.
When: Wednesday, December 2, 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Harley School, 1981 Clover Street, Rochester 14618

(Sponsored by 350.org – Rochester)
NATION – Tuesday, 12/1
We need climate action at every level of government, but federal level policies are especially important because they affect more people and have the power to influence global politics. On this Second Day of Climate, we support the work of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to put a price on carbon.
What you can do:
1. Watch (and share!) this video to get inspired about the work of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGUEw4Jkfh8
2. Call your House Rep and let them know you are concerned about climate change and would like federal carbon pricing. You’ll be adding your voice to thousands of CCL volunteers across the country. Click here to look-up your rep by zip-code.
(Sponsored by Citizens’ Climate Lobby – Rochester)
MEDIA – Monday, 11/30
Climate change is the crisis of our time, but it doesn’t always make it to the front page. This is clearly a problem. On this First Day of Climate, we leverage the power of media, to spread the word about local and global climate action.
What you can do:
1. “Become the Media!” Share photos and posts from RPCC’s March for Global Climate Action and invite your friends to join in on this 12 Days of Climate project. Also, don’t forget to “like” us on Facebook to keep up to date with local climate initiatives.
2. Encourage the media: Drop a quick ‘thank you’ to media outlets who cover RPCC’s March for Global Climate Action, and/or the Paris Talks. Let them know we appreciate the coverage, and that this is news people want to hear! Following the march, we’ll update this page to give you specific information about who to contact.

3rd Annual Gas Free Seneca Fundraiser
Exact date, time and location to be determined
From Gas Free Seneca:
"Thanks to all of you, we have been able to keep Texas-based Crestwood and their ill-conceived plan to store gas in unlined salt caverns off of Seneca Lake's shores for nearly 5 years. But we need you now more than ever. The Issues Conference in February was extremely costly, bringing in experts from around the country to provide independent expert testimony to an Administrative Law Judge. A full hearing may soon follow, and the costs will be even greater to have those experts prepare for trial. If there is to be no hearing, we will be filing for a re-hearing and an Article 78. Either way, we need your help!”
An evening of fun to benefit Gas Free Seneca. Silent Auction, Live music.

DEC Issues Conference
Regarding the LPG Storage Facility on Seneca Lake
Horseheads Holiday Inn, 2666 Corning Road, Horseheads, NY 14845
The Conference is a formal opportunity for pre-approved groups to present their arguments opposing and in support of the Storage Facility. Read more here.
Gas Free Seneca would like as many gas facility opponents to be there as possible. We need to out-number the gas facility supporters. Please be sure to arrive early! The court proceedings will be held in a room that holds 200, with those who have been permitted Party Status or filed Amicus Briefs being allowed in first, then room for others on a first come, first serve basis.
Please Remember, we need to be an extraordinarily respectful crowd since this is an official court hearing, with an Administrative Law Judge. We do not want to do anything that angers the judge, or prevents him from being able to hear Gas Free Seneca's arguments, so please, no chanting; and talking should be kept to a hushed minimum!
People should be able to assemble in the parking area and inside the Hotel. Please bring respectful signs only if you do not intend to go into the court proceedings, or give your sign to someone who is not planning on going into the proceedings.

Do You Want to Bail Out Ginna Nuclear Power Plant?
Last June, nuclear company Exelon announced that its Ginna nuclear reactor in Wayne County is losing millions of dollars and will close unless the Public Service Commission forces Rochester-area residents to bail out the reactor. RG&E is negotiating a bailout contract right now with Exelon. Bloomberg News reports this contract may nearly double electricity rates for RG&E customers.
Take action! File a comment today opposing the bailout.
If Exelon gets its way, Rochester-area ratepayers would be on the hook to help Ginna become profitable again by digging into their own pockets!

STILL A BRIDGE TO NOWHERE:
METHANE EMISSIONS AND THE GREENHOUSE GAS FOOTPRINT OF NATURAL GAS.
McManus Lounge, Hollister Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca 14750
On the 4th anniversary of their seminal paper with Rene Santoro, "Methane and the greenhouse gas footprint of natural gas from shale formations", Profs. Bob Howarth and Tony Ingraffea will present a retrospective on the new science that has ensued, the resulting proposed policy and regulatory changes, and the ongoing socio-political "discourse" on this topic. They will show videos of ongoing venting and leakage of methane from various sources and discuss the continuing impact of methane emissions on both air quality and climate change.
Here’s a link to their paper of the same title from April 2014: http://www.eeb.cornell.edu/howarth/publications/Howarth_2014_ESE_methane_emissions.pdf

Please Wear Blue, as a sign that you are opposed to gas storage on Seneca!
The media is sure to be there in force. To get a good sense of the significant and substantive issues that will be discussed, we highly recommend you look through Gas Free Seneca's Petition for Full Party Status and the public versions of GFS's expert's reports found here: http://gasfreeseneca.com/?page_id=763.

Sound outrageous? Want to know more?
