R-CAUSE was created in 2010 by Rochester citizens who treasure New York State and
want its waters, land and air to remain clean and its communities to remain viable.
R-CAUSE's goal is to inform as many people in the Rochester area as possible
about the state-wide risks associated with
high-volume, slick-water, horizontal hydraulic fracturing.

We hear a lot about the
Marcellus Shale which lies
south of the Thruway, but we
hear little about the Utica Shale
which lies under parts of the
Marcellus and under the
Rochester, NY area.

Utica Shale click here.
Photo of Hemlock Lake, with its watershed over the Utica, Marcellus and Devonian Shale, is a source of Rochester's
drinking water and is one of the purest undeveloped of the 11 Finger Lakes. Its headwaters originate in Steuben
County, one of the Southern Tier counties that may be opened to fracking.
