ABOUT THE NEW YORK STATE ENERGY PLAN (from New Yorkers Against Fracking):
Overview
On January 7, the New York State Energy Planning Board released the long-awaited New York State Energy Plan draft documents. There will be a 60-day public comment period, which ends March 31st, 2014 and will include six public hearings around the state. New Yorkers Against Fracking is encouraging our supporters to attend the hearings to make a clear statement about the energy plan: New York should invest in renewable energy and not include the use of fracked gas in its energy future.
Emissions
While the New York State Energy Plan does not include the process of fracking, it aims to increase the use of fracked gas. The energy plan also encourages conversion to fracked gas from oil as a way that New York State can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, the plan calls for emissions reductions of 80 percent by 2050 and 50 percent by 2030. The 2030 goal only applies to carbon dioxide whereas the 2050 goal properly applies to all greenhouse gas emissions. According to the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, methane is 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year time frame and 34 times more so over a 100-year time frame. Meeting the New York State Energy Plan’s goals very clearly requires not fracking. We will hold Governor Cuomo to meeting the climate goals he has set forth, which compel no fracking and more aggressive investments in renewable energy. That’s the path to a brighter, healthier future for all New Yorkers.
Investment in another dirty fossil fuel or renewable energy?
The plan promotes investment in fracked gas infrastructure repairs to make access to fracked gas more feasible and includes build out of new pipelines, compressor stations, and refueling stations. Infrastructure investments are long term, expensive, and take decades to pay off. Investment in dirty energy takes away from resources to begin the construction of a renewable energy infrastructure.
Social Justice
Even though the plan does not include extraction of natural gas in New York State through fracking, it is unjust for New York State to import and use fracked gas since it increases the environmental impacts in our neighboring states.
To keep his promise on climate change and to meet the energy plan’s goals, Governor Cuomo must ban fracking or will undercut his own plans. He must also halt investment in new natural gas expansion and infrastructure, and instead be a national leader by transitioning to renewable energy.

Here are 7+ things you can do to help stop fracking in NY and the US:
1. Send Governor Cuomo a Message to Ban Fracking Now: http://nyagainstfracking.org/take-action/signup-individual/
2. Join the “DON’T FRACK FRIDAYS” Call Campaign:
In order to let Governor Cuomo know that we don’t want fracking to ruin our health and our environment, please call the Governor’s office at (518) 474-8390 EVERY Friday to let him know that you don’t want fracking in New York State. Or write him:
The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo
Governor of New York State
State Capital Building
Albany, NY 12224
3. Per Walter Hang @ ToxicsTargeting.com:
A. Call and email your Assembly and State Senate Representatives. If they are not one of the 65 signatories to Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton's Letter calling for Formal DOH Review Public Participation, please ask them to become one. We should build maximum support in the Legislature for requiring public participation for the DOH Review.
See : http://www.toxicstargeting.com/MarcellusShale/documents/letters/2013/02/...
Assembly Members: http://assembly.state.ny.us/mem/
State Senators: http://www.nysenate.gov/senators
B. Thank Speaker Silver for the Assembly's leadership on safeguarding New York from shale gas fracking hazards. Request that he require formal public participation for the DOH Review. This is really important: Speaker@assembly.state.ny.us
C. ALSO CALL AND EMAIL GOVERNOR CUOMO: REQUEST THAT HE IMMEDIATELY PUT ON-HOLD HIS DOH REVIEW CONDUCTED IN SECRET WITH ZERO PUBLIC INPUT and limited to a Revised Draft SGEIS that has received scathing criticism.
THE DOH REVIEW MUST NOT BE ADOPTED PENDING FULFILLMENT OF FORMAL PUBLIC PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS.
